DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Purple and Gold banquet is a yearly tradition recognizing DC student-athletes and this year's featured speaker is local racing legend Sam Hornish Jr.
The event will be held on April 29 and tickets for the banquet can be purchased at the Defiance College athletic office or by calling 419-783-2342.
Hornish, a world-class race car driver, started his racing career at the age of 11 in the World Karting Association winning the Grand Nationals by age 15. Since his debut in racing, he has tallied 19 IndyCar Series wins, including the 2006 Indianapolis 500 and three IndyCar Series Championships.
He most recently competed part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the number 22 Ford Mustang for Team Penske. In 2017, Sam won at his home track, Mid Car Course and went on to win the Owners Championship in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Hornish recorded five NASCAR Xfinity Series races and posted 38 top-5 finishes.
He also continues to be an active member in the community as he was involved in the creation of a senior center as well as the addition of a heart center at the Promedica Defiance Regional Hospital. He also took his love of bowling and turned it into a successful charity campaign at the fall race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, in North Texas. Hornish, Jr. teamed up with Speedway Children's Charities to raise over $500,000 to benefit the local children.
